The sheet work is now nearing completion and the zippo top is taking shape. The distorted dislocated structure resulting from cold working of aluminum is less stable than the strain free annealed state to which it tends to revert. Any involved forming can lead to cracking or fatiguing the material but annealing can reduce these problems. The non heat treatable aluminum alloys may be torch annealed many times to achieve the necessary shape.

Fairings and fillets in particular require such heavy working and such great changes in shape that frequent annealings are quite necessary. Both proper heat application and temperature measurement are important. Avoid machining aluminum in its annealed state it s really sticky and it doesn t cut cleanly any more. In zone refined aluminum this reversion may take place at room temperature.

Easy to form pure 1100 aluminum sheets and bars because 1100 aluminum is 99 pure it offers superior formability corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity.
